Suuns sign with Secretly Canadian⎮Free EP download⎮Tour with Land of Talk and The Besnard Lakes

Suuns' blistering, dark electro and arena-sized psych is one the newest additions to the Third Side roster. The band has just signed with Secretly Canadian and recorded with Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes, who recommended them to the label on a post-it, with a modest "Thought you might like to hear them. They're pretty cool." A succinct phrase that hardly prepares you for their patently earth-shattering post-punk, obsessive musical marriage of droning grooves and hypnotic vocals. Their appeal lies in the music's ability to oscillate from the intellectual to the sensory, with thrilling results.

Secretly Canadian is offering a free download of Suuns' first release,  Zeroes EP ! You can get it here for a limited time:

DOWNLOAD "Zeroes EP"

Suuns' upcoming full-length album will be released before the end of 2010. You can enjoy them live right now on the East Coast with Parlovr, then in September with The Besnard Lakes and Land of Talk for a full-on U.S. tour. Check it out on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/suuns_

Stunning recording of Owen Pallett at Webster Hall!

Owen Pallett recently shared the stage of the New York City's Webster Hall with guitarist/percussionist Thomas Gill to play an amazing show. Pallett focused mostly on what he playfully called his "new jams," but he bookended the set with some golden oldies, including fan favorites "This Is the Dream of Win and Regine" and "The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead."

You can check the set list and listen to the show here

Radio Radio slayed at SXSW and then slayed again on French Radio!

Radio Radio played at Pop Montreal Party at SXSW and they served it up Montreal-style! They turned a Saturday night tired/uninspired crowd into a crazed and sexy dance-floor-party in under three songs.

Their last album is on top 5 palmares for the francophone sales! Nice one. Check their myspace out. They may be coming to a city near you...

Third Side Signs Tanya Tagaq

One of the newest additions to the Third Side roster is Tanya Tagaq. ‘Inuit throat singer’ does not begin to describe this extraordinarily creative collaborator who has worked with Bjork, Kronos Quartet, Buck 65 and Mike Patton, to name a few.

One of the most recent projects that Tanya is involved in is the short film "Tungijuq". The film gained interest when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was awarded the "Best Short Drama" at the Imaginative Film & Media Arts Festival, also in Toronto.

The film (in which she is featured and helped screenwrite), has been recently selected to be presented at the 2010 Sundance Music Festival!

For more insight on Tanya's talent, take a look at this "making of" video with the Kronos Quartet

TSM's Owen Pallett scores Tales Of The Uncanny

One of the earliest of German horror films, Tales of the Uncanny (Unheimliche Geschichten) was first released in 1919. Now, in association with the North by Northeast Music and Film Festival and the Goethe-Institut Toronto, Luminato brings this silent classic to Canada for the very first time.

Directed by Richard Oswald and starring Conrad Veidt in one of his earliest roles, Tales of the Uncanny (not to be confused with the same director’s 1932 remake) uses an antiquarian bookstore after dark as the framework for five distinct stories, among them Edgar Allan Poe’s The Black Cat. Berlin electronic artist Robert Lippok, Do Make Say Think, and Owen Pallett provide the live soundtrack for this historic screening.

Thursday, June 11 at 9:30pm (90min.) at Yonge-Dundas Square

Ferriswheel - Woodsongs From The Backroom

Ferriswheel is the new instrumental project of montreal’s pianist Mathieu Charbonneau (Torngat) and guitarist Simon Trottier (White Noise Ensemble, Timber Timbre). The result is a beautiful blend of musical genres hinting classical piano, folk fingerstyle guitar and indie rock.

From parlour classical to porch folk, their sometimes lively, sometimes staid compositions evoke the antiquated and the pastoral—–perhaps they’re aware of their cinematic potential, having titled the closing track Scrolling Names.” - Lorraine Carpenter, The Mirror January 2009

Numéro# - Sport de Combat

Sport de combat is the unexpected sequel to L'idéologie des stars. An album featuring eclectic production (funk, pop, folk, psychedelic, and electro) and more mature and personal lyrics.  A rich album that invokes the image of a fighter struggling with his identity. Proof that Numéro# still has a few tricks up their sleeves!

Handsome Furs new video
Hansome Furs - Face Control

FACE CONTROL, the second album from the Montreal’s Handsome Furs, is fast and up-beat and soulful and smelly and shiny and real. The duo, Alexei Perry and Dan Boeckner, wrote the songs together, the album was recorded and mixed by Arlen Thompson at Mount Zoomer, and it was then mastered by Harris Newman at Hotel2Tango.
FACE CONTROL will be released March 10, 2009.  The duo will also be participating in the Sub Pop Records showcase at the South By Southwest Festival (SXSW) this month.

Torngat - La Petite Nicole

Torngat

Torngat return with “La petite Nicole”, a grittier, propulsive sounding record that more closely resembles the bands live sound. “La petite Nicole” offers forays into dub-heavy elements of post rock as well hints of kraut rock and the occasional miniature freak-outs. To be released March 3rd on Alien8 Recordings.

Malajube-Obama

Malajube made the cut with the song Montreal –40C, which was chosen among the top “49 songs from north of the 49th parallel” that would best define our country.  The list was compiled by CBC Radio 2 and their listeners, and was presented to U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama on his Inauguration Day.  Who knows, TSM might end up licensing a Malajube track for Obama’s next campaign video.  Anything is possible now!

Welcome to Florence K

Third Side Music has added Florence K to the roster.  A passionate artist who writes and sings in French, English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese on her new album. Florence has loads of charm and talent and a fluid stage presence.  With a new CD La Historia de Lola, produced and mixed by Nick Petrowski (Arcade Fire) selling thousands of units a week, she will be raring to go out on tour in the new year! Her last CD won awards including a Félix for best world music and quickly went gold (over 80,000 sold). Her mother is the famous, gloriously eccentric opera comedienne Natalie Choquette, with whom Florence has been performing since she was 6.

TSM signs Erik Mongrain

Just back from a month long tour in Europe, where he performed in the UK and at the Nice Guitar festival, this young exceedingly skilled guitarist has been getting rave reviews.  Acoustic magazine (UK) acclaimed his skills in a recent interview:  ‘Exceptional talent combined with the ability to recall and execute complicated patterns, timings and syncopated rhythms make up the memorable melodies of Erik Mongrain'.

He has appeared twice now at Montreux Jazz festival and his video Airtap has been viewed an astonishing 3.5 million times on youtube.  He has plans to return to France for a number of dates in the spring, and he will also be heading to Japan where he is a star - the Japanese national network recently filmed Erik live at the St Joseph Oratory of Montreal.

Thunder-Hype!

Thunder-Hype!

We are pleased to announce a new edition to the TSM family... Thunderheist.

Having thoroughly brought the house down for various music supervisors at The Toronto International Film Festival's "Music Cafe" spot (where they also could be heard in the new Darren Aronofsky film "The Wrestler"), weeks later they found themselves signed to Big Dada Records who will be releasing their debut album worldwide in early 2009.

In the meantime... Jerk It :

(note that no chickens were harmed while jerking it)

Besnard Lakes devastate with devastation

Fresh off some dates with My Morning Jacket where they succeeded in getting the prog rock masses hyped (some of which who had just driven a day a half straight from Bonnaroo), and having spent a night doing serious damage to the Third Side expense account while drinking $8 beers while discussing business at a Rush concert... is it any surprise their new video revolves around fantasy horses with their heads in the mane, D&D sword fights, and monsters in sewers? Not at all really. Now if only they'd taken my advice and just played this track for 40 minutes while opening for My Morning Jacket...

Super fun TSM fact : Video directed by Kara Blake, sister to the lovely and talented TSM licensing super-force Julie Blake.

Owen Pallet with Shadow Puppets

I'm excited pretty much on a daily basis that Owen Pallet/Final Fantasy is part of the Third Side roster. But when The Last Shadow Puppets asked him to arrange strings for their project; a project which was initially described to me as being Scott Walker-ish... well that level excitement reached fever pitch... the same sort of fever pitch I felt when I managed to find an original copy of Scott Walker's "Scott 4" on vinyl oddly enough.

The Last Shadow Puppets is a collaboration between Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (The Rascals). Owen helped make this record sound big... really really big...

Check the first single for The Age Of The Understatement:
